Goldsmiths are expensive, or are they?

It surprises me that many people think that ordering something from a goldsmith or having it made is expensive or more expensive than from a jeweler.

The goldsmith is the direct producer of jewelry and usually does not have a store and the associated costs. It goes without saying that for solid craftsmanship a fair price should be paid in return. Every goldsmith in turn is an artist. One does not learn this in a few years. Just like a lawyer or engineer, many years of study precede this, although not always in theory but mainly in practice.

Trust should not be bought but earned!

A very interesting example that I have seen when I have worked for a number of jewelers is that the image and appearance of a store does a lot with the customer's trust towards the jeweler herself. For example, one particular day in Antwerp, someone came in who had seen a beautiful ring in the window for a diamond she already owned. The ring was a ready-made model without a center stone, it seemed to the customer a fantastic choice kwa model to have her diamond set in that beautiful ring. Unfortunately technically the diamond could never be set in that ring because the ring was set all around full of smaller diamonds. So there was no way to work on putting the diamond in it after all. Eventually, as a goldsmith, I was instructed to visually manniuplate the existing setting so it looked like the diamond could be put in. Because the jeweler just thought a sale is a sale and the customer trusted the jeweler the case was complete. The client was traveling in Antwerp and left the next day back home where she went to have the stone set at her local jeweler.

When clients come to me, the first thing I do is answer all the questions and clear up any misunderstandings. I let the clients look at the diamonds with a magnifying glass, explain to them what to look out for when buying. Even when one cannot manage to observe the tiny inclusions with a 10 x magnifying loupe I let them look under my microscope. The most important thing for me is that the customer 100% know what they have bought.
