Gold, why gold wedding rings?
First and foremost, let's be honest! What do you know about gold yourself? If you haven't studied as a goldsmith or jeweler, chances are slim that you really know much about gold outside of chemistry classes maybe?
Expensive or sustainable?
Gold is a precious metal that has been valid currency for 5,000 years, so yes gold is valuable. It has been used as valid currency since the 26th century BC. In fact, it is the first precious metal that mankind learned to work with and it was one of the most important revolutions of prehistory.
The precious metal quickly became a part of our everyday world because all you needed was fire to melt and transform it. Gold's unique appearance, its natural irresistible beauty and resistance to wear and tear made it an ideal material not only to work with but, more importantly, to show off.
Therefore, a gold wedding ring will always retain a certain value, but that is certainly not the most important thing!
Gold is and still remains 1 of the most coveted precious metals for jewelry, its luster, durability, versatile color possibilities,...
In my career as a goldsmith working for jewelers, I have seen many rings come in for repair where it was no longer possible to repair them and it was purely due to the choice not to take gold wedding rings. Steel wedding rings, titanium wedding rings or zirconium wedding rings, the same ring can never be enlarged or reduced. The cost to repair the rings is in some cases more expensive than the purchase of the rings! Another big problem with wedding rings is choosing the relatively inexpensive silver. Every week I have to put at least some silver rings back round, deformation is a very big problem with silver wedding rings. http://www.hansnagy.be/wit-gouden-trouwringen-wit-witterwitst/
Cost is an important factor to consider but for a wedding ring, which you will be wearing daily, it is definitely advisable to choose a solid, durable metal choice!
As a goldsmith-jewelry designer, I always try to give my customers as much and as accurate information as possible so they 100% know what they have bought! Product knowledge is very important in any industry, it is especially nice that sometimes people are really fascinated by what they find out here. Curious? Feel free to make an appointment with no obligation!
